Siccar Point is a publication about nature, risk and the financial architecture of resilience.
The essays ask three connected questions. How do functioning natural systems create economic value? How does their degradation turn into financial loss? And what has to happen before that value can support dependable cashflows that pension funds, insurers and other long-term investors can hold?
Nature finance starts with ecology, but it quickly becomes a question of economics, risk, contracts and market design. That is the ground these essays cover: catchments and coasts, discount rates and evaluation horizons, credits and contracts, insurance and underwriting.
Why Siccar Point
In 1788, James Hutton sailed along the Berwickshire coast to a rocky headland called Siccar Point. There, ancient grey rock stands almost upright beneath gently sloping red sandstone. Hutton saw it as proof that the Earth is endlessly worn down and rebuilt over vast spans of time. He was also a farmer, and a close friend of Adam Smith. He understood that lasting wealth rests on the slow, living systems beneath us.
The name suits the writing, too. Earlier arguments get exposed, tilted and built upon by later ones.
Who writes it
Siccar Point is written by Eoin Murray, co-founder of Siccar Point Natural Capital Advisors. Eoin was Chief Investment Officer at Rebalance Earth and has more than 25 years of investment leadership, including CIO roles at Federated Hermes and Old Mutual. He is pursuing a PhD in Nature Finance at Bayes Business School. Away from finance, he is a DEFRA Flood Rescue Tactical Advisor and a water rescue instructor with Exmoor Search and Rescue Team.
